End Post

So now you have seen the end result, I hope you liked the process I have gone through to create this media project and the research and planning I have gone through in order to portray a particular message on mental health. I believe that I have made the best possible video I could have done and working together with my group has allowed us to use high quality editing which produced this music video.

Thank You :)

Magazine Advert analysis

Relating this to our digipak we wanted to have an image that could be identifiable with both our digipak and music video therefore we used another image we took from our studio day down at South Norwood as this slow shutter speed image is a clear representation of the confusing state of mind that she is in. Although our other images our in black and white, we decided that we would use this in colour so people that don't know her as an artist can look at the and place her with the music video as she is wearing the same clothes. We used the same font as the digipak as we didn't want it to distract from the image behind it. We added at the bottom all the ways in which they can hear the song or follow us, and included a review so people could know how good the song is as well as the artist themselves. The name of the magazine is prominent in bold white letters as it stand out on the background image as people still need to know the name of the magazine for future references.

Digipak Analysis

In my digipak I believe it has supported my music video as I have included shots that are similar within my current music video. From using inspiration from existing digipaks I have been able to create one that I believe look both professional and relates to the them of our video. Using the high quality camera, a Canon 700D we were able to focus on specific feature of her which highlights her different emotions. By using this high quality camera we were able to adjust the shutter speed to a low one of 0.25 and make the trail effect on the image shown in the last image, this adds the sense of disorientation and showing that she has multiple personalities but this was a clear reflection of the strobe lighting effect we have in our music video. As in the music video we say she has a variety of different emotions we have made this clear as in each image on the digipak she doesn't have the same facial expression, doing this has encouraged this idea of her not being the same throughout. By using Adobe Photoshop, we have used the magic wand tool to cut away any part of the image that we didn't like, for instance in the top left hand corner we cut away the majority of the photo to have a close up image as its the only one showing her being happy.
The colours were important to us as we needed it to be able to relate to the video and although we do not shot in black and white these colours connote loneliness and isolation the main theme to our music video and we believe our audience will be able to link these together. Most of the images our close-ups and long shots as these are used to give the brand to the artist but also to highlight the artist's identity. We chose to include the lyric sheet in our digipak as the audience/fans can sing-a-long with the singer and enjoy performing the song like she does. Lastly we have added our record label and barcode to make it look directly like an existing digipak.

Flat plans for acillary task

Our Digipak

Magazine Advert

Lyric Sheet

In these rough sketches I have show my audience how I will be composing my ancillary tasks together and it will give them the chance to tell me what needs to be improved and how I can do that is through there feedback. I have wrote small annotations around the side so I can remind myself of what I am doing and for the audience to visualise the finished product which I believe will be good when I start putting these on photoshop.

Digipak Draft

This is our rough cut for our digipak as you can see we haven't got our record label and haven't included enough tracks on the CD. So through feedback we received, we changed the type of font we used in order to make it more stand out a little more by making it bolder. The images received good feedback so we knew we had to keep them in as they related to our video the most.

Social Media Update

Through using various social media website, I have been able to update my fans throughout the process of making my music video because I have been able to let them have a say in how our video is created. Through the use of Instagram I have been uploading snippets of filming to show the target audience the range of cameras we have been using but also they can see footage that we may not necessarily use, I believe that the updates on Instagram have been effective because my audience have been following the process with us, without just seeing rough cuts that we upload. We have gained a lot of feedback through our social media and I felt like we wouldn't have received this otherwise without going out ourselves and searching for the feedback. Instagram was also a great way as it allowed us to upload to other social media websites at one time as we could link our pages together, so we was also updating our Facebook and Twitter account at the same time.

We received more feedback from our Facebook page but they could be purely down to the fact that it is more popular, we allowed ourselves to upload the same clips and images from Instagram because we didn't want certain people in our target audience not being able to see the same as everyone else. By using quirky status we engaged our audience to want to see more which allowed for our sites to be updated regularly to always have our audience enticed with our music video. When realising snippets they would comment on what they did and didn't like which then allowed us to go back and change it or edited it in a particular way that we would feel was appropriate to fit what the target audience would like. We released a page from our storyboard and when our audience saw this they were able to have their first insight into our video, and we received feedback before we had even started filming. It was highly beneficial to use social media and constantly update because it allowed for us to use modern day technology to our advantage and it demonstrated that we could do as our audience wanted.

Rough Cut Analysis

In the rough cut of our music video "Ex's and Oh's" we uploaded this to Youtube because we thought we could gather information from a wide genric audience because we have been addressing everything at our target audience. Although this version wasn't finished it allowed for us to see if what people liked and disliked about our music video so far and the responses we got allowed for us to go on and create a video that people would like as it was based on their ideas. In the opening to the music video we have a birdseye view of our main protagonist, having this shot it allowed for the audience to feel superior to our character, but we challenged this by having her looking up at the camera as to say she was watching them. However she is seen on her own and this is the start of how people can understand that she is alone and highlights our theme on loneliness and isolation. The opening is a variety of our different locations and this is to allow the audience to understand the surrounding that our artist is in. We have the artist looking into the mirror for the first piece of lip syncing and I believe that this has shown that she is coaching herself into thinking that she is alone, it shows her reassuring herself. By using the mirror shot and the mid shot that follows this enables the audience to know who the artist is, and makes the audience feel as if they know the artist personally. We followed Goodwin's theory of having visuals and lyrics matching up so on the line "in the UK" we had a shot of the United Kingdom flag, this permits the audience to be able to understand what the song is about by having are visuals and lyrics being the same. By using advance editing we chose to have on-beat editing to the "one, two, three" of three phones with male names on the caller ID this was to again add to Goodwin's theory and show how she has past "lovers" after her. The rest of this rough cut isn't in sync but they have shown the audience a possibility of clips that we could use in the rest of the music video.
From this feedback as you can see people liked our onbeat editing, therefore we decided to keep this as it would emphasise us listening to our audience but the onbeat editing is quite engaging and would work in all parts of the "one, two, three". The style of shots were brought up and how they liked them so we want to incorporate the shot we have used into the rest of the music video and this would then allow for our music video to be highly engaging. However they did say they want to see some moving shots and this is what we aim to use in our next studio by using a dolley tripod whiles filming. The last comment talks about how we need to improve our lip syncing so we know that we will focus on this a lot when editing our clips again. Overall the feedback we have received has given us the chance to know what we can improve on and how we can do this through our lip syncing and changing particular shots we have.

Meeting Minutes

Shot list

Close ups: We use a range of these to promote the label and brand we are trying to create and this would be the effective way as they can see who she is and what I'm trying to represent to everyone.

Long shots: These shots are used so the audience can establish different costumes used and how this could show her different personalities and how she has performed for a long period of time.

Mid shots:  These are mainly used for the lip syncing shots and to show her attitude at the beginning suggesting she is trying to act as if she is someone else.

High Angle: This is to show that the female character has power over the viewers and to show that she is in charge of what is happening in this video. Showing her from a superior angle allows for the audience to see a different side to the character.

Low Angle: These shots are used later on in the video and this is to show the demise in the character and her downfall as this symbolise innocence and vulnerability which we thought was evident through these shots.

Birdseye View:  This is used to show the world around her and how it could impact on her life and it highlights that its voyeurism as the artist doesn't know that she is being watched from up high.

Point of View: We use this whiles the artist is looking in the mirror and this is to show that she is teaching/coaching herself to be a certain way, the shot is also used for us as the audience to see what she is seeing at how it could help us understand her as the character in this music video.

Pan: This camera technique is used to show the extreme close up of her lips and to show
the surrounding area around her.

Production Log 1

Day one of filming went in two pathways, we gained some high quality shots and some shots that were just poorly lit. The lip syncing shots that we were trying to focus on and used lighting to really accentuate this, I filmed a shot where its an extreme close-up of her lips and used an outdoor filming light so it highlighted her dark red lips, so the audience could connote the colour to what could happen later in the video. The studio was a successful place to film as even though we struggled with being able to light it properly we still managed to use our own equipment of torches and lights to light it how we wanted and to have it lit in certain areas that would show her off as the character. However, we only had time to film her in one costume on this day so when we use again we will need to use more costumes because it will suit the rustic feel to the studio. Also when we film here again we will need to take into consideration all of the poorly lit parts and not waste time trying to find the shot we are looking for.

Behind the Scenes

In this clip, our actress is lip synching to the pre chorus, I'm standing behind the camera filming, we thought that this would be a great shot to use as its the audience looking up to her, suggesting she is superior to them at this time. This is the same part of the song, and she is still on the piano but we thought that her actions and how she delivers the lines could be done different hence why we filmed it twice.

Research into Lyrics

These are the meanings on the original song, but we have changed what we used the meaning for as we wanted to create a message that associates with mental illness. However I have done this research in order to know what the meaning of the song was before so I could come up with ideas to make my storyboard into my music video, I believe I will be able to use some of these lyrics and use them a narrative for my plot line for my music video.
